A Wii version is also in development, but for now lets take a look at what the Opera browser on DS has to offer!

What's so special? The Opera DS browser would allow access to the full Internet through the Nintendo DS which goes against both Nintendo not making “do everything” devices (like the PSP) and playing it safe over Wi-Fi connections (having to use “Friend Codes” to match up with players online.)

Developer track record: Opera Software makes web browsers for Windows, Mac OS X, Solaris, FreeBSD, Linux systems, mobile phones, and PDAs. Through their partnership with Nintendo they are also developing a browser for the Nintendo Wii that will “take advantage” of the Wiimote.

Opera Software announced that they will release the Opera Web browser for the Nintendo DS on July 24th in Japan for about $33 dollars (or 3,800 Yen) and will come with a memory expansion pack. Opera or Nintendo have not yet said when the U.S. or European territories could see the Opera browser released but more information is promised once the product launches in Japan which will only be available for purchase online.

The Opera DS Web browser allows you to view web pages across both screens with the top screen being a zoomed in view of the web page and the bottom screen showing the full page where you can use the stylus to move what the top screen displays. The Opera Web browser also allows handwriting recognition with the stylus for easy text input along with an onscreen keyboard if desired. The handwriting system works by writing one letter at a time into two different boxes so while the system calculates the letter in one box you can write the next one.

Let’s hope that unlike the Play-Yan the U.S. and Europe will get a chance to purchase the Opera DS browser so that you can surf the Internet on your DS when you’re out and about, cause let’s face it we know you’re addicted to GWN.com! If Nintendo does not decide to release the software in the U.S. or Europe we'll let you know, but there is always the option of importing from Liksang
