Yoshi is babysitting once again in the sequel to one of the greatest 2D platformers ever.
Ever since the original Yoshi’s Island, our favorite green dinosaur has had it pretty rough when it comes to games that he has starred in. Yoshi’s Story for the N64 was a short, easy, unsatisfying, and disturbingly cute platformer that was incredibly disappointing when compared to its predecessor.
Yoshi’s Topsy-Turvy was a Gameboy Advance game that utilized tilt technology and provided a pretty unique experience, but like Yoshi’s Story, the game proved to be too short and too repetitive to match up to the high standards set by Yoshi’s Island. Then of course there was Yoshi’s Touch and Go for the DS which never really broke free from its tech demo roots and ended up being a simple “beat the highest score!” arcade style game.
Just when we thought Yoshi was doomed to star in short and gimmicky games forever, Nintendo surprises the hell out of us by showing off a playable copy of Yoshi’s Island 2 for the DS at E3.
Yoshi’s Island 2 is being developed by Artoon, the same developers behind the Blinx series on the Xbox as well as the previously mentioned Yoshi’s Topsy-Turvy. While their track record may disturb fans of the original Yoshi’s Island, rest assured that the developers at Artoon are doing their best to preserve the classic Yoshi’s Island feel while adding in several new gameplay features that are sure to make the game all the more interesting.
