Touch the Dead

Touch the Dead offers five area specific points on a zombie’s body that the player can target.  Other than headshots, targeting these different areas yields different graphical responses, but no real strategic response.  If players could affect the distance and speed of the approaching zombies by targeting specific body parts then this would have resulted in a deeper strategic element to the game.  For example; targeting a zombie’s leg would make him advance at a slower pace.  Targeting his body would send the zombie backwards, increasing the distance between you and the zombie.  Now it is no longer a simple matter of first come, first serve.

Zombies moving down a hall. Maybe I should shoot the closest one first.

Choosing between the different weapons could have also been a more strategic choice if different guns would have been more or less effective on different zombies.  For example; the shotgun could have a devastating effect on fat zombies, but do little damage on the skinny zombies.  On the flip side, the sub-machinegun could make short work of the skinny zombies, but require a lot of wasted ammo on the fat ones.

Finally, the strategy of timing reloads and limited ammo is already built into the game, Dream On Studios just needs to tweak it in order to make these elements work longer.  First of all, get rid of the dragging-the-bullets aspect of reloading and instead assign the action to the left shoulder button.  Second, balance out the limited ammo.  Some times while playing I had an over-abundance of ammo and other times I was completely dry.

Highs
Great concept for a DS game; variety of branching paths; Touch screen shooting works well.

Lows
Horrible reload mechanic; sub-par graphics; dialogue that is highly condensed in its awfulness.

Final Verdict
Basically I think Touch the Dead could have been a great game. The concept was great, the only thing working against it was the fact that using the touch screen to shoot zombies could have proven to be too easy compared to its light gun cousin. To make up for this the developers seemed to go out of their way to make the game unfairly difficult when instead they should have increased the strategic elements of the game. This would have resulted in a more enjoyable game and would have helped set it apart from the House of the Dead series.
