Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trials and Tribulations
Home : Games : Reviews : Nintendo DS : Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trials and Tribulations

Trials and Tribulations is a sequel, yes, but in the same way that a new episode of a television show is a sequel to the previous one. The engine is exactly the same as the first two games, which in itself is barely changed from the original Japan-only GBA games the DS titles are remakes of - other than shifting around visual elements to accommodate the extra screen real estate, the only DS-specific features are optional basic touch screen controls and some gimmicky microphone use.

The 2D sprites are entertaining enough, but the limited amount of animation is frustrating given what the DS is capable of. The music is up to par with the past two games, but it would be great to hear the game’s ultra-catchy melodies performed in higher fidelity than low-quality synthesized tracks. It would have been really nice to see some DS-exclusive features such as in the bonus fifth case in the first Phoenix Wright game, but I guess that will have to wait for Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney, the next game in the series developed natively for the DS.

You can use the touch screen to select items.

As disappointed as I am that there were no real changes to Trials and Tribulations from the previous games’ engine or gameplay formula, I’m still in love with this game. As I I mentioned, this is a game you play for the writing, and the quality is definitely there. More features would be nice, but I am perfectly content with the opportunity to experience five more cases in this wacky but lovable world the developers have created.

The start of the first of the game's five cases.

It is tough for me to say this as a journalist, but I have to be honest: I think there is very little I can say in a review of Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Trials and Tribulations that will sway your purchasing opinion. If you played through the first two games, you probably don’t need me to sell you on this game: you are buying this game for more of the same, and there is nothing wrong with that. If you had no interest in any of the earlier games in the series, this game will not change your mind. If you are a newcomer to the series but your interest is piqued, do yourself a favor and play through the series in order - you will be able to enjoy Trials and Tribulations, but you will miss out on a lot without knowing the characters’ backstories.

Highs
Fantastic writing; more of the same gameplay you know and love.

Lows
Still essentially a GBA game quickly ported to the DS.

Final Verdict
While it doesn’t do anything differently, if you enjoyed the first two Phoenix Wright games you’ll surely want to pick up the latest installment for more old-school adventure goodness with the same quirky sense of humor and quality writing.
