War is hell....finally.

Advance Wars: Days of Ruin. The title pretty much says it all. Nintendo's camp has been much abuzz about the new, dark direction that the popular Advance Wars franchise has taken in its latest installment for the DS. Despite this turn-based strategy series ranking pretty low on the "Game Series' That Need to be Overhauled" list, the all-new character cast and serious storyline are a refreshing contrast to the ever-merry band of killers shtick of previous Advance Wars titles.

As you can see, Days of Ruin's battlefield remains familiar.

When you stop and think about it, the sight of plucky youth waging war and being all smiles afterwards is kind of disturbing. Advance Wars: Days of Ruin sweeps aside the upstart adolescents from Advance Wars: Dual Strike, who looked like they were ripped from One Piece, and replaces them with a far more fleshed-out cast of heroes and villains. Struggling to survive in a world all but destroyed by deadly meteors, these new characters will face everything from murderous mad dictators, to human experiments, to mutant viruses. Needless to say, despite a few leftover corny one-liners, you won't be skipping the dialogue this time around.

Those who may dread Days of Ruin's changes extending beyond the setting and characters will breathe a sigh of relief upon entering the familiar grid-based battlefield that's been used in every other Advance Wars. As always, you and the enemy army take turns deploying and maneuvering infantry, tanks, helicopters, missile launchers, subs and more on a large map. Cities will be captured; units will battle using a rock-paper-scissors-like system and one side will ultimately lose after either having their forces routed or their HQ captured. This is the case most of the time anyway.

In deep contrast, the characters have undergone a dramatic, more sophisticated re-design.

Several units have been added, scrapped or altered for Days of Ruin. The most notable losses include the Neotank, Megatank, Piperunner, Black Boat, Stealth Bomber and Black Bomb. The most noteworthy additions include the Anti-Tank, the first indirect combat unit that counterattacks (yay!); the Gunboat, an alternative to the Lander with limited weapon capacities which can transport one foot soldier; and the Duster, a moderately-powerful propeller plane that can strike both air and land units.
