Summon Night: Twin Age

The plot of the game is perfectly serviceable. Summon Night: Twin Age takes place in a land called Clardona, where there has for years been a conflict between humans and the beastlike Kascuza. When the world’s spirit entities start acting up, you go on a quest to get to the bottom of the sudden disturbance. It may not be particularly original, but the characters are interesting and the plot twists are frequent enough to keep your interest up.

Where Summon Night: Twin Age really shines is in its presentation. The crisp, colorful two-dimensional graphics evoke many of the great Super Nintendo action RPGs such as Secret of Mana. When characters are conversing, the anime-style close-up portraits that appear on the screen look just as good. Similarly, the game’s music predominantly features a generic anime-esque sound, but it works. The excellent snippets of voice acting peppered throughout the game are but the icing on the cake of what is a wonderfully well-presented game.

Just look at the gorgeous Anime-inspired cutscene art!

Summon Night: Twin Age is not a risky game. It never veers far from the realm of the tried-and-true in either gameplay or storytelling, but its high production values redeem it from being a completely forgettable experience. If you’re looking for a dungeon crawler to satisfy your light action-RPG urges, Summon Night: Twin Age may be just what you’re looking for, but it is hardly memorable.

Highs
Solid stylus controls; stunning 2D sprites and great use of voiceover work.

Lows
Highly derivative; over-eager AI allies can take the fun out of battles.

Final Verdict
While Summon Night: Twin Age is a perfectly acceptable dungeon crawler, it has nothing that makes it particularly compelling.
