The new 3D battles look gorgeous, complete with dazzling spell effects, lengthy (but thankfully, skipable), screen-filling summons and wonderfully-animated characters and enemies. Battles are a little slower this time, but not so much because of the extra frames of animation but the sheer difficulty of battling this time around.

Simply put, Final Fantasy IV for the DS makes the original hard-type version of the game look like Barbie Horse Adventures. Every last enemy is not only twice as strong, twice as tough and twice as fast as you remember, but they even have new attacks. Bosses that you could once strike down with a single blast of Thundaga have been transformed into nightmare titans of terror.

So what kind of tools has Square-Enix provided for us to counter these punishing new challenges? Well while we’re on the topic of battles, there’s now a special bar that appears when you select a spell or attack which shows how long that spell or attack will take to cast. The DS’s top screen now displays a map of whatever area you’re in, which is both extremely helpful and provides item rewards for 100% completions. Some of your characters will obtain new spells and equipment. Most of all is the addition of the Augment system.
