As unique and entertaining an experience as this RTS/action game is, the cumbersome, mostly stylus-only controls do make the game unnecessarily difficult at times. Things don't always get built where you want them to be, and building structures sometimes loosens adjacent structures for some bizarre reason. Attack and repair controls aren't always accurate, and sometimes don't even work at all. In a game where time is of the essence, having valuable seconds eaten away just cause one piece of wall gets knocked loose when a piece of wall is placed next to it is frustrating and unacceptable. You're also likely to find yourself wishing for a skip button during the game's cut scenes, which do their best to tell a rudimentary story, but will ultimately leave you itching for the mayhem to resume.

Once again, the DS leads the way in innovation as Lock's Quest represents another odd, yet successful mergence of two, perhaps three different genres. Slightly better graphics and a multiplayer mode might've been nice, but all in all, it's an enjoyable, addictive game that'll keep you occupied for at least a good 20 hours. Simple enough for newbies to get into, yet containing enough variety to keep hardcore strategy enthusiasts interested.

Highs
Innovative, addictive gameplay; intense battles

Lows
Inaccurate stylus controls

Final Verdict
Despite some control issues, Lock's Quest may just be the sleeper hit of the year. Definitely worth checking out if you own a DS.
